What is a wedding design deck?

A wedding design deck is one short document that tells every vendor how your wedding should look and feel, so you stop explaining it from scratch.

Quick answer

  • A wedding design deck is a short visual document (usually 8 to 15 pages) that explains how your wedding should look and feel.
  • It holds your story, your palette, a small set of reference images and your priorities.
  • You send the same deck to every vendor, so your florist, planner, photographer and stationer all work from one vision.
  • It replaces the Pinterest board link, which shows what you like but not what you want.

Why your Pinterest board isn't enough

A Pinterest board is a collection. It has hundreds of images that each say something slightly different, and nothing tells a vendor which ones matter. Your florist sees the peonies. Your planner sees the long tables. Your photographer sees the moody lighting. Everyone is right, and everyone is working on a different wedding.

A design deck is an edit. It says: of everything we saved, this is what we mean.

What goes in a wedding design deck

  1. 1.

Your story. A paragraph about the two of you and why this wedding looks the way it does. Where you met, a city you love, a restaurant you keep going back to. This is the part vendors remember.

  2. 2.

Three words. How the day should feel, in three words. "Warm, unhurried, a little glamorous." These words settle more decisions than any image.

  3. 3.

Your palette. Four to six colors with the proportions you want, not just a row of swatches. Mostly ivory and butter, with olive as the accent, for example.

  4. 4.

Reference images. Twelve to twenty, not two hundred. Each one should earn its place, and the best ones often come from outside weddings: a hotel lobby, a film still, a painting.

  5. 5.

What matters most. Two or three priorities and two or three things you don't care about. This is how vendors know where to spend your money.

  6. 6.

One page per vendor (optional). A short note for each vendor about how the vision applies to their work.

How a design deck saves you time

Without a deck, you explain your wedding in every first call, every email thread, every mood board review. Each vendor hears a slightly different version, and the gaps show up on the day.

With a deck, the first call starts from the same place for everyone. Vendors come back with ideas that fit instead of questions. And when you're stuck on a decision, from linens to the getaway car, you can check it against your three words and your palette instead of starting over.

When to make one

Before you book most of your vendors. The ideal moment is after you've chosen a venue and before you start talking to florists, stationers and rental companies. It's never too late, though. A deck made three months out still pulls everyone back to one vision.

Do you need a designer to make one?

No. A design deck is a way of thinking, not a piece of software. You need a clear story, an honest edit of your inspiration and a simple layout. If you'd rather have a designer do it with you, that's what our creative direction packages are for.
